"Don't You Forget..." Real Music :: Glenn Lewis

Being a music journalist, one thing that often crosses my mind often, is the lack of real music that people tend to over look. In fact, it's not even an issue of 'lack of', but more of real talent being under rated. Artists like Ledisi, Vikter Duplaix and even Eric Roberson are also overlooked and delve into the genre of neo-soul. Neo Soul isn’t just music for the afro-wearing "environmentalists", but for people that truly appreciate the element of deep rooted talent for music. When I found out that Glenn Lewis was going to be performing for one night only in London, I had to go - even if it was by myself. So, as I sat outside Vibe Bar, Brick Lane, I caught another early arrival. Chris Philips is a Soul DJ for various stations including Colourful Radio, Jazz FM, and where I first met him, Choice FM. After the show I was on, I would sit outside the studio and vibe to the new releases from Maxwell and Chokalte that he had for his show. Without him I probably wouldn't know about Dwele and Raheem DeVaughn! Chris is always up to date with what I like to call REAL MUSIC. Chris allowed me to sit in on his interview with Glenn Lewis as he talked about his new album and why he's been away for so long (full interview will follow).
When it comes to gigs, I often feel sorry for the opening acts, because, really, no one really cares and people are anxious about the main act. But the support was amazing. I could write a whole blog entry about Nadine Charles, because this girl is amazing! She has the crowd on fire with her fusion Jazz, Soul and pure R&B. She performed You Are the One and Kisses in the Morning and revealed the true colours of music. A live band will do that for you! No need for an orchestra, but the way a bass, keys and set of drums are orchestrated can make a big difference to live music.

As anticipated Glenn Lewis didn't make it to the stage until 11 o’clock, but what I love about these gigs, is that they are very appreciative of their audience, and very much so of their band. As in his interview, he was very hospitable and smiley as he apologises for the decade long wait and opened up with one of my FAVOURITE tracks of all time, for so many reasons,Glenn Lewis Storm's.

  1. I love the way you write! You're right, people over look real music, and it's a damn shame
